This week we are going to wade into an area of controversy in our planet. That there is controversy about it says much about the state of the world and that there are nations where there is no controversy about it says even more. First of all, i will add all i know of that relates to it and since i believe that life begins at conception this part will include verses about children both born and unborn. After this i will give you a little of my thoughts on abortion, how i came to my conclusions, and some possible solutions. If you haven't got it by now i am pro life and i personally believe that even if we have a great revival (i believe we will) the blood of the babies on the hands of this (USA) and many other nations will sooner or later be atoned for one way or another.
Since abortion is a relatively new thing, there is little in the Bible about pre born children, but there is little difference expressed between pre born and born children. If abortion had been an option back then perhaps we would not have 12 tribes of Israel. Maybe when Rachel the wife of Jacob had trouble delivering Benjamin some doctor would have recommended taking the baby to save the mother.
In Exodus 13: 2 the Lord had this to say Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine. This verse makes one wonder how many abortions are performed on teenage girls who would be giving birth to their first child. It also makes one wonder if the Lord still considers them HIS CHILDREN.
In Exodus 21: 22, 23 the Lord was giving Israel the laws statutes and judgments through Moses and had this to say; If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life. As i understand it this verse says that the husband can name any punishment he wishes on those who accidentally cause a miscarriage, or still birth, and if mischief follows it is out of the husbands hand and the death penalty is called for. Folks this is for an ACCIDENT, not a deliberate act.
Here in Judges 13: 2-7 is the story of an angel telling Samson's mother of his birth, before he was conceived. And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bare not. And the angel of the Lord appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no rasor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines. Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name: But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death. If the child in the womb is only a blob of tissue why are doctors, social workers, and mothers so concerned that expectant mothers refrain from smoking, and drinking. Yet a mother who doesn't WANT her child can go get rid of it. The only difference is the desire of the mother. In these verses is one example that children in the womb are called to service by the Lord.
Here is a verse in Psalm 22 which is a Psalm about the Messiah, 10 I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.
Psalms 27:3-5 a very short Psalm contains these words; Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
Psalms 139:13-17 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!
In Isaiah the prophet is describing the day of the lord; Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir. Isaiah 13:9-12 Here we see one reason why He has such fierce anger, gold was more valuable than life in the eyes of the people. This is one reason given to justify abortion, having a child will hinder my career! and a few verses later the prophet says; Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it. Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children. verses 17, 18.
Does this sound like any modern nations we know of, like maybe one that is ascending in power and influence? here is a thought about appeasing tyrants. Since the very nature of tyrants is to TAKE EVERYTHING they can get away with, the idea that one can buy them off is lunacy. If you don't have the will and the way to make it hurt too bad to steal everything you have, the tyrant will act when he thinks he can. One thing about tyrants, though they are evil to the core they are huge cowards, and usually only oppress those who are weak and unable to resist them. You will almost never see a tyrant move when the odds are not greatly in their favor, however a brave person will act even when the odds are aganst him, because his cause is just.
Just a word of comfort here, Isaiah 49:15, 16 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me. Even though mothers are killing their babies in the womb and increasingly after they are born (where to next? Maybe these children that survive will learn the lesson and kill their PARENTS when they become inconvenient.) the Lord tells those of us who know Him that He will not forget us. He has engraved us on the palms of His hands, and He used some pretty large nails to do it with. He won't forget.
Here is Jeremiah's calling in chapter 1: 4, 5 Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. This one is pretty self explanatory.
While we are in this time period of Israel history, i will include a little history about it which helps explain why the Lord would destroy His own people's nation. The people of God were to be an example to the rest of the people of the earth of how God would treat those who acknowledged Him and obeyed Him. The Lord even delayed giving the land of Israel to the children of Abraham because the iniquity of the people there was not full. If you read the story of Abraham and his son you will see that though there was evil in the land there was also a respect for righteousness. God even warned the Pharaoh of Egypt in a dream to treat Abraham right concerning his wife and withheld Abimelech from bringing judgment on himself concerning her. When the time was right, the iniquity of the people in the land being full and the Israelites having become numerous enough to inhabit the land, the Lord delivered it to them and told them that strangers could live there as long as they agreed to live by the laws that God had given them but that they were never to take up the practices of those who they displaced. Not only did the Israelites take up their practices and worship their false gods, they became worse than the people that were there before. Here is an account of the time of Manasseh who was king of Judah after the Lord had already removed the northern kingdom and just before Jeremiah.
2nd Chronicles 21: 1-16 Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Hephzibah. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, after the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord cast out before the children of Israel. For he built up again the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed; and he reared up altars for Baal, and made a grove, as did Ahab king of Israel; and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them. And he built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord said, In Jerusalem will I put my name. And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the Lord. And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments, and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards: he wrought much wickedness in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger. And he set a graven image of the grove that he had made in the house, of which the Lord said to David, and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever: Neither will I make the feet of Israel move any more out of the land which I gave their fathers; only if they will observe to do according to all that I have commanded them, and according to all the law that my servant Moses commanded them. But they hearkened not: and Manasseh seduced them to do more evil than did the nations whom the Lord destroyed before the children of Israel. And the Lord spake by his servants the prophets, saying, Because Manasseh king of Judah hath done these abominations, and hath done wickedly above all that the Amorites did, which were before him, and hath made Judah also to sin with his idols: Therefore thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Behold, I am bringing such evil upon Jerusalem and Judah, that whosoever heareth of it, both his ears shall tingle. And I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the plummet of the house of Ahab: and I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipeth a dish, wiping it, and turning it upside down. And I will forsake the remnant of mine inheritance, and deliver them into the hand of their enemies; and they shall become a prey and a spoil to all their enemies; Because they have done that which was evil in my sight, and have provoked me to anger, since the day their fathers came forth out of Egypt, even unto this day. Moreover Manasseh shed innocent blood very much, till he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another; beside his sin wherewith he made Judah to sin, in doing that which was evil in the sight of the Lord.
In those days, as in ours, and also in the days of the early church, promiscuity was rampant and when that is the case, one result is unwanted pregnancy. Since they didn't have abortion in those days to take care of the problem they invented a religion to justify killing unwanted children. Or in the case of Rome they would just abandon them to die. The early church would collect these children and raise them, which i suspect cause the Romans to resent the Christians and probably contributed to them accepting the Christians and their children being fed to lions etc. The last thing someone wants when they have behaved badly is something to remind them of it. Back to Jeremiah's day, when the above verse says that they made their children pass through the fire it is describing the following. The people had set up an idol in the valley outside Jerusalem made of metal. The idol was partially hollow and they would keep a fire going in the hollow part. When someone had a child they wanted to sacrifice to this false god they would bring it and it would be placed in the arms of the waiting idol. If you haven't gotten the picture yet, metal is a VERY good conductor of heat.
This is getting long and i don't want to make it a two part study so i'll add one more verse here and a brief explanation and then move on to part two. The king Manasseh would be punished for his wickedness and be taken captive. In his captivity, he would repent and be restored to Israel to be king again. His son would rule for 2 years after his death and then his grandson Josiah would bring revival to the land for the 31 years he ruled however the seeds of evil were grown too far to be destroyed. There would be 4 more kings of Judah after Josiah but 2 of them would only be king 3 months each and the other two for 11 years each. The last would see the destruction of Jerusalem. Jeremiah would see all these last 5 kings and warn the people who did not listen. Here is a verse that should make the believers in the USA tremble to read. Surely at the commandment of the Lord came this upon Judah, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he did; And also for the innocent blood that he shed: for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood; which the Lord would not pardon. 2nd Kings: 3, 4
In case i haven't made the case against abortion well enough yet, here is my opinion of the days we live in. Abortion exists because we want to disobey God and escape the consequences. Of course none of us would ever do it, or let our daughters do it, but isn't it handy to have around just in case. If all the bible believing people in the US made this a priority it would be illegal by the end of the year. The fact that we don't is an incitement against us, those of us that support politicians who protect it.
Remember what i said above about the children that survive learning their lesson? Well about the year 2020 give or take, these children are going to be faced with the decision of living in squalor and supporting their children and their parents, or they will VOTE for politicians that will allow them to put one or the other out of their misery, after all the distance between an UNWANTED baby and an UNWANTED parent is pretty short. Already we see in Europe that euthanasia is becoming acceptable, even to the point where the doctors of one country can decide, without the patients knowledge, which are suffering too much to live or not. In several years when social security becomes a burden that the young are no longer willing to bear and enough of the baby boomers die off to be unable to overcome their votes, the odds are that they will find a solution that those who are 30 or so years old or older now will not like. Perhaps instead of planned parenthood being about the way babies do or don't come into the world it will become about the way children plan their parents leaving the world, all conveniently worked into their schedules of course. Perhaps they will be allowed to instruct your doctors to take care of it in one way or another, all to relieve you of your suffering and give you a peaceful exit of course.
Here is the logic of abortion. A man and a woman get together and do things that according to the bible they shouldn't. Perhaps they will marry some day but for now they are not sure and so the solution is to kill their baby and wait for better circumstances. In this case the woman and the man are both guilty and the solution is to destroy the innocent and let the guilty go free. Suppose the man is an older man and seduces the girl who is underage, the man is very guilty and the girl is also though maybe to a lesser degree. We put the man in jail and give the girl an abortion, again the girl goes free and the innocent child is killed. How about if the girl is raped and the man is jailed. Even though the girl is innocent of the rape, killing her equally innocent child makes her guilty of murder, at least in God's eyes even if not man's.
The only case that could even be classified as possibly being justifiable is those rare cases where the choice is between the life (the life as in life and death not if she will be inconvenienced) of the mother or the child. Who are we to determine which condition, such as down's syndrome, makes a life unworthy of living? Of course you know this is precisely where the Nazis began their little list of which groups were and were not worthy of life. Oh you didn't know that, well now you do, and now you know how far and fast down this highway to hell a nation can go.
In ALL cases abortion causes the death of an innocent human being, the MOST innocent among us and in most cases the reasoning behind it is that it would be more INCONVENIENT to have this life around than to kill it. Much like it is inconvenient for a thief or rapist, or some other criminal to have witnesses that can identify them around, so they kill them. God will not allow this to continue much longer, perhaps if we repent He won't have to do to us what he did to Germany, or Jerusalem.
When Roe v Wade was being debated and all over the news i remember being curious about it (i was still in school) and after considering all the information i had heard, decided within myself that it should be a woman's right to choose what to do with her own body. After all, everyone was saying that the child wasn't really a human being yet and who wants to have a child that was the product of incest or rape, or worse, one that was disfigured or less than a whole child in some way.
Because i had no information to refute these lies, this was my attitude until i went into a 7-11 for something one day. At the check out stand, i looked down at the counter top and there was a tract about abortion and on the front of it a picture of an aborted baby. This one picture totally destroyed 100,00 words that convinced me that abortion was O.K.. Anyone who can look at such a picture and still say that it is a blob of flesh, or should be allowed in any case is already partially dead and just waiting for the grave.
This memory is as vivid as my memory of the day JFK was killed and even of the day i was saved. In all three of these cases i could take you to the very spot i was at the time down to the school room in the case of JFK, the spot at the alter when i was saved, and within 10 inches of the spot on the counter in the case of the tract.
There is a reason why the networks will show the effects of some bombing, or shooting, or other destructive act that causes death and injury and will not for any reason show the image of an aborted baby. The impact would be overwhelming and if they did it once a day on every channel, abortion would be illegal by the end of the year. God Bless those who have stood in front of clinics and in the gap while the rest of us have said how tragic and what's for dinner. My prayer is that as long as abortion is "legal" they will continue to rescue as many babies and their mothers as possible.
This is not a fight that will be won in front of clinics though. As long as the networks can cut and paste footage to make them out to be wacos or worse, the public will be confused at best. This issue must be won by turning public opinion against abortion with the truth and as i said before a picture is worth 100,000 words in this case. Until the public comes face to face with the fact that these are little people who look just like them and realize that it is murder, they will remain apathetic about it. Recently i read a story of a group that put pictures on trucks of aborted babies. Think of all the people who will see them as they drive around. If abortion is to be defeated, we need more innovative actions like this, perhaps with billboards, maybe by leaving fliers from house to house. After all many of you would do this to promote other things much less important. Yes you will catch flack for it, as someone once said you always catch flack when your over the target, but whatever we suffer here is temporary and worth it. Jesus, after all, suffered so that you could live.
Well this was longer than i expected but in my opinion there is no other issue, except bringing people into the kingdom, that is closer to the heart of God. and no other issue that makes Him more angry. It is also an issue that will not go away any more than slavery would in the 19th century. We'll leave the issue for now with this quote from Jesus about children. Matthew 18:10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.
God bless and keep you and cause His face to shine upon you and give you peace, and a heart for the babies, and a plan to do something about it.
