Since the day of Pentecost is this week why don't we take a look at it in the word. The day commemorates the giving of the law at mount Sinai so i guess we should start there.
Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Passover and though i have been unable to prove that the law was given on that particular day, i can show you that the law was likely given within that week. Perhaps one of you knows a scripture that proves that particular day, if so please share it with me, until then here is what i have. Exodus 19:1  In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai. According to this scripture they arrived at the wilderness of Sinai in the third month. The months at that time contained 28 days, 28 +28 = 56 days. The Passover was on the 14th day of the 1st month so 56-14 = 42 days after Passover. This scripture does not say how many days into the 3rd month they entered the wilderness of Sinai so it really could have been from 42 days after Passover to 70 days after. Personally i believe at least 42 days and no more than 47, it is however a choice and again if somebody has evidence in scripture i would appreciate it.
   Verse 2 For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount. For it to work out to 50 they would have had to camp before the mount on the 47th day or sooner. Moses goes to talk with God and receives instructions and promises for obedience, Verses 3-6. Moses returns and tells the elders God's instructions, which they agree to and he then returns to talk with God, verses 7,8. God then gives these instructions to Moses;
Exodus 19: 9-13 And the Lord said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the Lord.  And the Lord said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes, And be ready against the third day: for the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death: There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.
The bible doesn't say how long this took but i think its safe to assume it took the better part of a day at least, probably longer for them to set boundaries around the mountain. For those with ears to hear there are some amazing clues in this portion of scripture that very well could be relevant to the days we live in but that's another study, for this one lets add 47 +2, which brings us to 49 or 7 weeks. Moses returns to the people and they prepare for the third day verses 14,15. This would be the 50th day after Passover.
Exodus 19:16-25 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. And the Lord came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the Lord called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up. And the Lord said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the Lord to gaze, and many of them perish. And let the priests also, which come near to the Lord, sanctify themselves, lest the Lord break forth upon them. And Moses said unto the Lord, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it. And the Lord said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the Lord, lest he break forth upon them. So Moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them.
Yes they had priests before the law, and sacrifice, and many of the things that were later codified in the law, remember that Noah was commanded;  Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female. Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth. before the flood Genesis 7:2,3. If you only know what Hollywood has told you about these stories, you owe it to yourself to get into the word and check it out for yourself. After all when you stand before God, "i thought" and "pastor said" are not going to be admissible evidence, especially for those of us in the western world that have multiple copies of His word to get the truth from.
Exodus 20: 1-17     And God spake all these words, saying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
  Thou shalt not kill.
  Thou shalt not commit adultery.
  Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
Hollywood's version has God and Moses up on the mountain with God writing the 10 commandments in stone. While this would happen later (Exodus 31:18 And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God) the bible says that the people HEARD God speak these words.
Exodus 20: 18-22   And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us,
lest we die. And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was. And the Lord said
unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven..

Not to be too rough about it but these people had the same reaction that most people have when God speaks to them, they back away in fear and find somebody to stand between them and God. At this point i will remind you that ALL of these people except for Joshua and Caleb would die in the desert and never enter the promised land. Their children however would go in, some day God willing i will do a work on the exodus from Egypt to the promised land. There is so much to tell and point out that it could take a while to finish and a couple of months of study's to tell. In the mean time let me encourage you to read it and see what the Lord shows you. For now just remember that Jesus said, Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Luke 12:32.
After God gave the ten commandments to all the people Moses went up the mountain and stayed there 40 days to receive the tablets of stone and hear more statutes and judgments from God.
Lets now look at some of the promises that God through the Prophets gave concerning the law and His people, then we will look in the chapter of Acts, and see that you can count on God promises.
Psalms 37:31 The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.
Proverbs 3:1,2  My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
Isaiah 2:3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
Isaiah 8: 13-18   Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken. Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. And I will wait upon the Lord, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him. Behold, I and the children whom the Lord hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.
Verse 20; To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
Isaiah 51:7,8 Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings. For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation.
  Jeremiah 31:31-33
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
And the next verse which every child of God should be looking forward to and working toward.

31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Micah 4:1-3 But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
Now lets look in the new testament (actually new covenant).
Matthew 5:17-19  Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
OK, this is a good spot to examine something in the exodus story, in the interest of saving space i won't include the scripture but if you read the story as i suggested earlier then you will see it. First notice that Jesus said that those who broke the laws and taught people to do the same would be called the least IN the kingdom and those who kept and taught them great IN the kingdom.  In the Exodus story, you might remember that while Moses was up getting the tablets the people were making a false God, which they had just heard God Himself tell them not to do. These people would complain and whine about many things, and God would try to correct them (remember what they said, "did you bring us out in the desert to kill us because there weren't enough graves in Egypt"). After all their complaining and disregard for the laws and statutes, still God led them to the border of the promised land.
Only after they believed the 10 cowardly spys instead of God, Moses and the 2 spys that said lets go in, did God condemn them to wonder in the desert until they died. It was UNBELIEF that kept them from their promised land and only the same will keep us from ours. All that does not diminish the purpose nor the importance of the law, it was never meant to save, it was meant to preserve. Every one of you that have children have rules that you expect them to keep, is God our Father not allowed to have His own? If one day your children made their own set of rules and refused to obey yours, how would you feel? Would you be as gracious as our Heavenly Father is? Just something to consider.
In Matthew 15:1-6  there is a story that explains some of the problem that Jesus had with the priests of His day; Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
And in Romans chapter 6 i will include these verses but you should read the whole chapter carefully. 6:12-16 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Well i'm going to wrap this up by saying that i do not advocate that everybody go out and stone the next offender that you see, in fact Jesus said to forgive your enemies. What i am saying is that it is in your best interest to learn and keep the law (not the ceremonial as in animal sacrifice) as God gave it.    Read the 13-16 chapters of John some time and notice how many times that Jesus referred to keeping His commandments. God didn't give us rules to frustrate us but to show us the boundaries, much like you do for your children.
Acts 2: 1-4 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
The day of Pentecost, the day that the law was given to the congregation at the mountain of God, the same day that the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and were changed from hiding believers to world changers.
But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jeremiah 31:33
Ezekiel 11:18-20 And they shall come thither, and they shall take away all the detestable things thereof and all the abominations thereof from thence. And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh: That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.
Well i hope i didn't run a lot of you off, this is a subject that is not to be taken lightly and there is a lot of disagreement about it. As for me, it took a lot of leading to get me this far, and it's not been without a price. Whatever the price though, i am a truth seeker and that in itself is costly. If you have questions, comments,  or want to discuss this subject in any way, as always leave a message in the board above or send me an e-mail, the e-dress is above.  Until next week the Creator of heaven and earth bless and keep you and cause His face to shine upon you and give you peace.
