This is a short study on the events from the day Jesus entered Jerusalem to the day He arose from the grave, the most important week since creation.
Day 1 the first day of the week,  (we call it Sunday)
Jesus enters Jerusalem fulfilling many prophesies of the old testament, lets examine a few of them. In Exodus 12 is the story of the first Passover, Pharaoh and Egypt had suffered the near total destruction of their country and still wouldn't let the children of Israel go so Jehovah was to bring one more plague on Egypt. Jehovah told Moses that every firstborn child of the land was going to die except those whose house had the blood of a lamb on the door posts and lintels. The children of Israel were to kill a lamb, put it's blood on the door frame and eat the lamb that night. Before they were to kill the lamb they were instructed to choose a lamb and bring it into their house. Exodus 12:3. Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:   6.  And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.  Sometime between sundown on the 9th day of the month and sundown on the 10th day of the month they were to select the lamb, the Jews to this day count their days from sundown to sundown, see Gen.1:5 And the evening and the morning were the first day. The Christian Church celebrates this day as Palm Sunday because when Jesus entered Jerusalem that day on a borrowed donkey colt Zechariah 9:9 the people laid palm branches before Him, Matthew 21:8, John 12:12,13. I can see already that if i give every example of fulfilled scripture during this week, this will not be a short study as i promised, so i will give some of them as we go along and try to stick to the main point of this study.
The next few days Jesus sat in the temple teaching the people about the kingdom of God. As He did this the priests sent their subordinates to examine Him for flaws. read Exodus 12:5.  Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:  Not being able to find anything that they could use against Him they were faced with the choice of (1). joining the movement as many were which would have been humiliating considering Jesus had called them a generation of vipers hypocrites and whited sepulchers Matt. 12:34, 23:27,33 (2). Not joining and let it continue which would have (from their point of view) resulted in them loosing their position by Jesus taking it away John 12:19 or the Romans taking it away and possibly the nation also John 11:47-50  or (3) they could plot to kill Him. They chose the latter.
This would prove to be a touchy endeavor however because the people loved Him and thought He was at least a prophet and possibly their Messiah. You can see in their handling of this situation much of how satan gets things done, which would be a whole other subject but in 4 days the people are moved from saying  Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. Matt.21:9 To saying Let him be crucified. Matt.27:22 and His blood be on us, and on our children. Matt.27:25.
Just a word of wisdom here. The only way a nation can possibly be free from being led around by the nose is for the people of that nation to KNOW GOD, and His WORD and have the attitude that it is better to die with the truth than live with a lie. No tyrant wants an unchangeable set of rules that even he is governed by. Back to the study. These priests find a traitor in Jesus inner circle Matt.26:14-16 so that they can arrest Him away from the crowds which they were afraid of Mark 12:12 and they wanted to accomplish it before the feast day for the same reason Matt.26:5.
There are several prophesies that were fulfilled through Judas. For one example compare Zechariah 11:12,13   And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.   And the Lord said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the Lord. And Matthew 26:14 and 15 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,  And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver then Matthew 27:3-7 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.
For those of you who maybe don't know the story, Jesus was in the garden on the mount of Olives and Judas led the representatives of the chief priest up to arrest Him. They held Him that night and put Him through a fixed trial the next morning that included the priestly council, Harod the appointed king, and Pilate the Roman governor. He was beaten, whipped, spat upon, mocked, had a crown of thorns beaten on His head, in fact read Isaiah 52:13 through 53:12. They then paraded Him through Jerusalem and nailed Him to a cross on a hill called Golgotha. Read Psalms 22 for some idea of what it must be like to die that way, Jesus even quoted part of it while He hung there Mark 15:34. Many people believe this happened on Friday thus good Friday, but i believe this happened on Wednesday the 4th day of the week.
This would fit perfectly with the instructions that were given for the Passover Exodus 12:3 and 6 which called for the lamb to be kept for that exact period of time then killed. A little side track, when Abraham took Isaac to a mount in the land of Moriah Gen.22:2, many believe this to be the temple mount in Jerusalem. Listen to what Abraham said when the ordeal was over  Gen.22:14.  And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen. Surely as the priests were killing the Passover lamb on the temple mount for Israel the real Passover lamb was being killed a short distance away.
Jesus, while disputing with the priests before they captured Him had said in Matthew 12:29,30  An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. If you have an old calendar from last year, 2000, dig it out and look at how the Passover and the Holy Week work out. Jesus enters Jerusalem on the first day of the week which would be the 10 day of the month on the Jewish calendar. The 4th day of the week Wednesday would be the day the Passover was killed to be eaten for dinner that night, remember the days start at sundown for the Jews.
Read John 19:31-37  The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
Along with the Passover, the Lord commanded Moses to observe the days of unleavened bread, Exodus 12:15,16 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you. This first day of unleavened bread would begin at sundown on the day they killed the Passover lamb. This is how there can be a Sabbath in the middle of the week.  The scripture that said a bone shall not be broken is found in Exodus 12:46 the one about looking upon Him whom they have pierced is in  Zechariak 12:10.
Jesus would have died and been buried just before sundown. The next day the priests went to make their triumph sure Matthew 27:62-66.  Since all the shops would have been closed up for the holy day, the women would have had to wait until 6th day of the week (Friday) to get the spices and ointments that they intended to anoint Jesus' body with. They do not go to the tomb until before sunrise on the 1st day (Sunday) of the next week. Compare Mark 16:2, Luke 24:1 and John 20:1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.   Mark says at the rising of the sun Luke says very early in the morning  and you read what John said.
From this we can tell that they came Sunday morning just before sunrise and Jesus was already risen. Luke 24:1-3 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
So lets see if Jesus was telling the truth when He said He would be in the tomb 3 nights and 3 days. He was crucified on Wednesday, spent Wed., Thurs., and Fri. nights and Thurs., Fri., and Saturday days in the tomb. Though it could have been as early as sunset (which would begin the next, 1st, day of the week for the Jews) on Saturday when Jesus arose, we don't know exactly when that night it happened We do know that it happened BEFORE sunrise and the above scenario explains how it could happen that way and fits perfectly the Passover story.
The Lord has portrayed many scenes in the bible to show the truth to His creation because He love us and wants us to choose what is right so that we can be blessed and be a blessing. Let me add this short one here to challenge you to choose life. When Jesus hung on that cross there were two thieves hanging there with him, one on each side.
You can find the story in Matthew 27:38-44, and Luke 23:39-43 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
These two men were to me a perfect picture of so many who come to Jesus. They were both guilty, but only one would admit it. They were both right next to their Messiah, but only one would believe it. They BOTH asked Jesus to save them, one from the cross, the other from his sin. Which kind of thief are you?
Well, OK i know i said it would be short but you try telling such a tremendous story, or even just part of it as i have, and keep it short. I pray that you are being fed through this study and if you have questions about my challenge at the end i'd be glad to answer any i can. Just e-mail me, the link is at the top of the study.   Until next week the Lord bless and keep you, the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and give you peace. And by the way HE IS RISEN INDEED!!!!!           : )
